At the University of Portsmouth, our ITE courses help our trainees to become highly skilled, research-informed teachers, able to deliver a forward-looking curriculum for the pupils of tomorrow with resilience and compassion.
Through our ambitious training programme, tailored to meet the needs of our partnership, we aim to develop teachers that will make a real difference to the life chances of young people in Portsmouth and beyond. Expert colleagues, both at the university and in our partnership schools, offer high-quality individual support and mentorship to enable our trainees to become confident, successful teachers who excel in their profession.
By providing high quality education and training, informed by up-to-date and relevant research, our trainees acquire the knowledge and skills to develop their classroom practice over time. Training is led by experts and practitioners from the university and across the partnership. Expert colleagues based in schools embed and extend that training, so trainees can apply and reflect on what they have learnt. Through school-based mentoring, professional dialogue and coaching, trainees work towards meeting increasingly challenging targets that improve their classroom practice. With a focus on reflective practice, trainees learn to take responsibility for their ongoing professional development as increasingly autonomous professionals.
The impact of our curriculum will be seen through the expertise and commitment shown by our trainees as they start their teaching careers, becoming key players and leaders in making a difference to the life chances of the young people they teach.
Schools benefit from a symbiotic relationship of knowledge exchange. Mentor training courses ensure mentors are highly skilled and have the curriculum knowledge they need to support trainees well. We offer outstanding individual support to our trainees to help them on their journey, placing well-being at the heart of everything we do.
